Page 1 of 3 Preliminary Planning
Mayor David N. Cicilline created the Department of Art, Culture +
Tourism in 2003 to provide centralized support for the city's arts
economy and forge cultural connections across neighborhood boundaries.
Five years later, Mayor Cicilline officially launched the cultural planning process to further catalyze artistic innovation and cultural development
in Providence. Creative Providence, the community-wide cultural plan, will guide public
policy,
private initiative, and investment.
The Department of Art,
Culture + Tourism informally began cultural planning in October 2007, with meetings, focus groups,
and conversations about the city's art, culture, and creativity. Key moments from the preliminary planning efforts included:
- Arts Investment Taskforce
- Arts & Prosperity III
- Providence's Department of Planning and
Development initiated the Providence Tomorrow Neighborhood Charrettes -
a community planning effort leading to the creation of an updated
comprehensive.
